God

God is the infinite, eternal being — one in nature, three in Persons — the creator of all things, the source of all truth and love, who invites every human being into a personal relationship.

God

God is the infinite, eternal being — one in nature, three in Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, the source of all truth and love, and the author of salvation. Everything receives its being from him; he alone is Being itself (CCC 198, 213, 279).

The Name of God

When God revealed his name to Moses — I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:14) — he disclosed that he exists by his own nature. God is not one being among many; he is the fullness of being, the one from whom all things come and to whom all things return (CCC 213).

One God, Three Persons

There is only one God. Yet within the one divine being there are three distinct and equal Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the central mystery of Christian faith. The three Persons are not three gods, nor three parts of one God, but one God who exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (CCC 200–202, 234, 253).

What God Is Like

God is eternal, almighty, all-knowing, all-present, infinitely holy, perfectly just, and infinitely merciful. He is not an impersonal force or abstract principle but a living Person who knows, loves, speaks, and acts — and who invites every human being into a personal relationship with him (CCC 268–271).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can reason prove God exists? Yes. The Church teaches that God's existence can be known with certainty through natural reason from the things he has made — through the order of creation, the existence of contingent beings, and the universal moral sense (CCC 36–38). Divine revelation confirms and deepens what reason can reach.

Is God male? God is neither male nor female — he is pure spirit, beyond biological sex. The masculine language used of God in Scripture (Father, King, Lord) reflects how God revealed himself, not a biological claim. God transcends human sexual distinctions (CCC 239, 370).
