Holy Days of Obligation

Holy Days of Obligation are feast days on which the faithful are required to participate in the Mass.

The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and His Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life (CCC 2177). In addition to Sundays, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass on the principal feast days which honor the mysteries of the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and the saints (CCC 2177, 2180).

Precept of the Church

The first precept of the Church is: 'You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor' (CCC 2042).
