Transcendence and Immanence
Transcendence means God infinitely surpasses all creation; immanence means he is intimately present within it. Catholic theology holds both in tension — God is beyond all things and close to all things simultaneously.
Transcendence and immanence are two complementary attributes of God describing his relationship to creation. Transcendence means God is beyond and above all creation — infinitely greater than anything he has made. Immanence means God is intimately present within creation, sustaining it and acting within it (CCC 212, 300).
Divine Transcendence
God is not part of the universe — he is its Creator, wholly other than what he has made. He is not bound by time, space, or the laws of nature. No human concept can fully capture what he is; all our language about God is analogical — pointing toward a reality that infinitely exceeds our capacity to grasp it. This is why the Church insists on the apophatic (negative) way: we often know God better by saying what he is not (CCC 40–43).
Divine Immanence
At the same time, God is not a distant deity who created the universe and walked away. He is intimately present within every creature, sustaining each in existence, knowing each from within, and working within history to accomplish his purposes. "In him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28; CCC 300).
The Balance
Overemphasizing transcendence produces deism — a God so distant he is practically absent. Overemphasizing immanence produces pantheism — collapsing God into creation. Catholic theology holds both in tension: God is infinitely beyond creation and infinitely intimate with it simultaneously (CCC 212, 300).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is God personal or impersonal? God is personal — he knows, loves, wills, and acts. He is not an impersonal force or principle. The Incarnation is the supreme proof: the transcendent God became personally, bodily present among us in Jesus Christ (CCC 212).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
