Adonai

Adonai is a Hebrew name for God meaning 'Lord,' used by the Israelites out of reverence for the sacred name Yahweh.

Adonai (Hebrew for 'Lord' or 'Master') is the title used by the Jewish people to refer to God without pronouncing the holy name YHWH (CCC 209). In the New Testament, this title is applied to Jesus to confess His divinity (CCC 446).

Kyrios in Greek

In the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint) and in the New Testament, Adonai was translated as Kyrios. By calling Jesus 'Lord,' the Apostles affirmed that He is the same God who revealed Himself to Israel (CCC 446-451).
