The Empty Tomb

The tomb of Joseph of Arimathea where Jesus was buried and from which He rose on the third day.

The Empty Tomb is the first sign of the Resurrection of Jesus, discovered by the holy women and the Apostles on Easter morning (CCC 640). While not a proof in itself, it remains an essential sign that Christ's body was not left to corruption (CCC 640).

Sign of the Resurrection

The empty tomb confirmed the angel's message: 'He is not here; he has risen' (Matthew 28:6; CCC 640). It remains a site of pilgrimage and the central hope of the Christian faith (CCC 640, 647).
