The Garden of Eden
The biblical paradise where God placed the first humans, Adam and Eve.
The Garden of Eden represents the state of 'original justice' and holiness in which the first man and woman were created (CCC 374-376). It was a place of harmony between God, humanity, and the rest of creation (CCC 376-379).
The Fall and Promise
Through the first sin, humanity lost the paradise of Eden, but God immediately promised a 'New Adam' (Christ) and a 'New Eve' (Mary) who would restore what was lost (CCC 410-411).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Eden a literal place? The Church teaches that the account of the Fall uses figurative language to describe a primeval event that took place at the beginning of human history (CCC 390).
