The Great Commission

The command given by the Risen Christ to His Apostles to preach the Gospel and baptize all nations.

The Great Commission is the final instruction of Jesus: 'Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' (Matthew 28:19; CCC 849). It is the source of the Church's missionary mandate (CCC 849-851).

The Mission of the Church

By this commission, Christ associates the Church with His own mission of salvation, promising to remain with her until the end of the age (CCC 767, 849).
