Hope
Hope is the theological virtue of confident expectation of eternal life — a firm trust in God's faithfulness, not wishful thinking, anchored in Christ's promises.
Hope is the theological virtue by which we confidently desire and expect from God both eternal life and the grace we need to attain it. It is a firm and certain trust in God's faithfulness — not optimism or wishful thinking (CCC 1817).
Hope Is Not Wishful Thinking
Christian hope is not a vague feeling that things will work out. It is a firm and certain trust in God's faithfulness — a confident expectation of eternal life based on Christ's promises and the merits of his sacrifice, not on our own righteousness. It is a virtue anchored not in present circumstances but in what God has revealed and promised (CCC 1817, 1820).
The Two Enemies of Hope
The Catechism identifies two sins against hope. Despair is the abandonment of hope in God's salvation — the conclusion that God's mercy will not or cannot reach you. Presumption is the opposite error: taking God's mercy for granted, assuming salvation without repentance or effort. Both are grave sins against the theological virtue of hope (CCC 2091–2092).
Hope in Suffering
Hope is the virtue that sustains the Christian in suffering, trial, and apparent failure. "We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope" (Romans 5:3–4). Because hope is anchored in God's promises rather than present circumstances, it can coexist with great suffering (CCC 1820).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone be certain of their salvation? The Catholic Church teaches that one cannot have absolute certainty of one's final salvation (against the Protestant doctrine of "assurance of salvation"). But the person in a state of grace has confident hope — a real and founded trust in God's mercy and their own sincere desire to love him (CCC 2005).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
