Hymn

A hymn is a song of praise or prayer addressed to God, used in the liturgy and private devotion.

Sacred song, as an essential or integral part of the solemn liturgy, participates in the purpose of the liturgical words and actions: the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful (CCC 1156-1157). Hymns are a way for the assembly to participate actively in worship (CCC 1158).

Scriptural Roots

Christian tradition has always included hymns, often based on the Psalms or other scriptural texts, to express the faith in music (CCC 1156).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is singing important in Mass? St. Augustine said, 'Singing is for one who loves.' It engages the whole person—mind, voice, and heart—in the praise of God (CCC 1156).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
