Justification

Justification is the grace of the Holy Spirit that cleanses us from our sins and communicates the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Justification is not only the remission of sins, but also the sanctification and renewal of the interior man (CCC 1989). It is the most excellent work of God's love made manifest in Christ Jesus and communicated by the Holy Spirit (CCC 1994).

The Gift of Grace

Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered Himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of propitiation for the sins of all men (CCC 1992). It is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith (CCC 1992).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does justification include works? Justification is a free gift of God's grace, but it requires man's cooperation and response. It is the beginning of a life of holiness where faith 'works through love' (Galatians 5:6; CCC 1993, 2010).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
