Original Sin
Original sin is the state of deprivation of original holiness and justice into which all humans are born as a result of the first sin.
Original sin is the sin of the first parents, Adam and Eve, which transmitted to all of their descendants a human nature deprived of original holiness (CCC 417).
A State, Not an Act
For us, it is a sin 'contracted' and not 'committed'—a state and not an act (CCC 404). It affects all humanity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Baptism remove it? Yes, Baptism erases original sin, but the consequences like concupiscence persist (CCC 405, 418).
