Omnipresence

Omnipresence is the divine attribute by which God is fully present everywhere — not spread out across space like a gas, but wholly and completely present at every point of creation simultaneously. "Where can I flee from your presence?" (Psalm 139:7; CCC 300).

What Omnipresence Means

God is not contained or limited by space. He is not "up there" or "out there" while absent from "down here." He is fully present everywhere at once — in the depths of the earth, in the farthest galaxy, in the human heart. This is why prayer can be offered anywhere, why God hears every cry, and why no one is truly alone (CCC 300).

Three Modes of Divine Presence

The tradition distinguishes three modes of God's presence in creation: by his power (upholding all things in existence), by his knowledge (knowing all things from within), and by his essence (present everywhere by what he is). In addition to these, God is present in a unique way in the soul in a state of grace — dwelling within the person through sanctifying grace and the indwelling of the Trinity (CCC 260).

Omnipresence and the Incarnation

The Incarnation did not confine God to one place — the eternal Son of God became present in a new, bodily way in Jesus of Nazareth, while remaining omnipresent as God. This mystery — that the infinite God took on finite humanity — is at the heart of the Christian faith (CCC 470).
