The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity — fully God, the Advocate and Sanctifier — who dwells in the Church and in every baptized person in a state of grace.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity — fully God, equal to the Father and the Son, the Lord and Giver of Life. He is called the Paraclete (Advocate), the Spirit of Truth, and the Sanctifier of the Church (CCC 685, 691).

A Person, Not a Force

The Holy Spirit is not an energy, feeling, or impersonal power. He is a divine Person who knows, wills, speaks, and acts. Jesus promised to send "another Advocate" who would remain with the Church forever (John 14:16), and at Pentecost that promise was fulfilled (CCC 687).

The Holy Spirit in History

The Holy Spirit has been active from the beginning — hovering over the waters at creation (Genesis 1:2), speaking through the prophets, overshadowing Mary at the Annunciation, descending on Jesus at his Baptism, and empowering the Apostles at Pentecost. The age of the Church is the age of the Holy Spirit (CCC 702–741).

What the Holy Spirit Does

The Holy Spirit sanctifies — conforming us gradually to Christ. He dwells in every baptized person in a state of grace, making the body a temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19). He imparts the seven gifts, produces the twelve fruits of the Spirit, sustains the sacraments, and guides the Church into all truth (John 16:13; CCC 733–736, 1830–1832).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Holy Spirit the same as the "Holy Ghost"? Yes — "Holy Ghost" is the older English translation. Modern translations use "Holy Spirit." Both refer to the same third Person of the Trinity.

What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? The final, willful refusal to accept God's forgiveness — not a single act of impiety, but the definitive hardening of the heart against God's mercy (CCC 1864).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
