The Resurrection of the Body
The resurrection of the body is the belief that each person's body will be raised at the end of time and reunited with their soul — the same body, transformed and glorified in Christ.
The resurrection of the body is the Catholic belief that at the end of time, each person's body will be raised from the dead and reunited with their soul — the same body, transformed and glorified. This is a defined truth of the Catholic faith, professed in every recitation of the Creed (CCC 988–1004).
Why the Body?
The resurrection of the body is not Greek or Platonic — the Greek philosophers hoped for the liberation of the immortal soul from the mortal body. The Christian hope is the opposite: the redemption of the body. Human beings are body-soul unities; the full redemption of the person requires the full redemption of both body and soul (CCC 990).
The Nature of the Risen Body
The risen body will be the same body — personal identity and continuity are preserved. But it will be transformed: no longer subject to corruption, suffering, or death; endowed with new qualities. Paul describes it as a "spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:44) — not immaterial, but fully subject to the spirit and sharing in the glory of God (CCC 999–1001).
Grounded in Christ's Resurrection
The resurrection of the body is grounded in and guaranteed by the Resurrection of Christ. His risen body — real, tangible, bearing his wounds, yet transformed and glorified — is the "firstborn from the dead" (Colossians 1:18) and the model and cause of our own resurrection (CCC 989, 995).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cremation prevent resurrection? No. The Church permits cremation — God is not limited by the physical state of the body at death. What the Church asks is that cremation not be chosen as a denial of belief in bodily resurrection (CCC 2300, 1683).
