The Supernatural

The supernatural is the order of reality that transcends nature — grace, the theological virtues, the sacraments, and the Beatific Vision — the gifts God adds freely beyond what nature alone could achieve.

The supernatural refers to the order of reality that transcends the natural — what lies beyond the capacity of nature alone to produce or know. In Catholic theology, the supernatural order encompasses grace, the theological virtues, the sacraments, and the final end of humanity: the Beatific Vision (CCC 1998).

Nature and Supernature

The natural order is what God has built into creation by the act of making it — the laws of physics, the operations of reason, the natural moral law. The supernatural order is what God adds freely on top of nature through grace — elevating the creature to a participation in the divine life that no creature could achieve or even desire by natural powers alone (CCC 1998–2000).

The Supernatural End of Man

Human beings are created for a supernatural end — the Beatific Vision, the direct knowledge and love of God as he is in himself. This end exceeds what any natural creature could attain on its own. It is entirely God's gift — which is why grace, faith, and the sacraments are not optional extras but absolute necessities for reaching the goal for which we were created (CCC 1).

The Supernatural and Miracles

Miracles are supernatural events — God acting within creation in ways that exceed the ordinary operation of natural causes. They are signs of God's power and presence, confirming divine revelation and authenticating the mission of Christ and his Church (CCC 156).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does believing in the supernatural contradict science? No. Science investigates the natural order — the regularities built into creation. The supernatural order is not in competition with science; it is simply outside science's domain. Faith is not anti-rational — it is supra-rational, going where reason cannot reach on its own (CCC 159).
