The Tabernacle (in church)
The Tabernacle is the sacred receptacle in which the Consecrated Host, the Real Presence of Christ, is reserved for the sick and for adoration.
The Tabernacle is the sacred vessel used for the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament (CCC 1183). Its primary purpose was originally to house the Eucharist for the sick, but it is now also a focal point of adoration (CCC 1379).
The Real Presence
Because the Eucharist is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, the Tabernacle is treated with the highest reverence (CCC 1378-1379). It should be located in an especially worthy place in the church (CCC 1183).
