Theology
Theology is the rigorous study of God and his revelation, traditionally defined as 'faith seeking understanding.'
Theology (from the Greek theos, God, and logos, word or study) is the systematic study of God and the truths of divine revelation. St. Anselm famously defined it as fides quaerens intellectum—"faith seeking understanding" (CCC 158).
Theology and the Economy
The Fathers of the Church distinguished between Theologia (the mystery of the inmost life of the Blessed Trinity) and Oikonomia (the works by which God reveals himself and communicates his life). Through the oikonomia, the theologia is revealed to us. Genuine theology always begins with faith in what God has revealed, and uses reason to explore its depths and implications (CCC 236).
