Theophany
A theophany is a visible manifestation of God to humankind, such as the burning bush or the cloud on Mount Sinai.
Theophany (from the Greek for 'manifestation of God') refers to the ways God appeared to reveal His presence and plan in the Old Covenant (CCC 707, 2059). Examples include the burning bush seen by Moses and the glory of God in the Temple (CCC 707).
The Ultimate Manifestation
While Old Testament theophanies were signs, the definitive theophany is the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, in whom the invisible God becomes visible (CCC 422, 1159).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Baptism of Jesus a theophany? Yes. It is often called the 'Theophany' because it manifested the three Persons of the Holy Trinity (CCC 535).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
