Vicar of Christ
The title of the Pope as the representative of Christ on earth.
The Pope is the Vicar of Christ because he acts as the visible head of the Church and the representative of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, in the governance of the universal Church (CCC 882, 936). He is the successor of St. Peter, the rock on whom Christ built His Church (CCC 552, 881).
Visible Foundation of Unity
As the Vicar of Christ, the Pope is the visible source and foundation of the unity of both the bishops and the whole company of the faithful (CCC 882, 936).
