Apparition
An apparition is a supernatural appearance of a heavenly being, such as Jesus, Mary, or a saint, to a person on earth.
An apparition is a form of private revelation in which a sacred figure becomes visible to one or more individuals (CCC 67). The most famous examples include the appearances of Mary at Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima.
Role in the Church
The role of apparitions is not to add to the public deposit of faith, but to help people live the faith more deeply in a particular historical period (CCC 67).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Catholics required to believe in apparitions? No. Even if an apparition is approved by the Church as 'worthy of belief,' it is not a matter of divine faith necessary for salvation (CCC 67).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
