Baptism of Jesus

The Baptism of Jesus is the event at the Jordan River where the Holy Trinity was revealed — the Father's voice, the Son in the water, the Spirit as a dove — inaugurating Christ's public ministry.

The Baptism of Jesus is the event recorded in the Synoptic Gospels in which Jesus went to the Jordan River, was baptized by John the Baptist, and the Holy Trinity was simultaneously manifested: the Father's voice from heaven, the Son in the water, and the Holy Spirit descending as a dove (Matthew 3:13–17; CCC 535–536).

Why Jesus Was Baptized

Jesus had no sin to repent of — he had no need of Baptism for himself. His Baptism was an act of solidarity with sinners and the inauguration of his public ministry. By entering the water, Jesus "fulfills all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15) — accepting his mission as the servant who takes the sins of the world upon himself. The Jordan is where he publicly accepts his role as the suffering Servant who will bear the sins of many (CCC 536).

The Theophany

At the moment of Jesus's Baptism, the Holy Trinity was simultaneously revealed: the Father's voice declared "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17); the Holy Spirit descended as a dove; and the Son stood in the water. This is the New Testament's clearest Trinitarian revelation before Pentecost (CCC 535).

Relationship to Christian Baptism

Jesus's Baptism foreshadows and gives meaning to Christian Baptism. Christ sanctified the water of Baptism by entering it himself. "From the waters he rose again, and the dove of the Spirit alighted on him, inaugurating the new creation" (CCC 1224). Christian Baptism is a participation in Christ's own death and resurrection (Romans 6:3–4; CCC 537).
