Fasting
Fasting is a form of penance involving the voluntary deprivation of food to focus on spiritual growth and dependence on God.
Fasting is one of the three principal forms of penance, along with prayer and almsgiving (CCC 1434). It is a way of mastering our instincts and attaining freedom of heart (CCC 2043).
Liturgical Fasting
The Church establishes certain times and ways of fasting, especially during the season of Lent, to prepare the faithful for the liturgical feasts and to help them grow in the spirit of penance (CCC 2043).
