A Covenant of Life

A covenant or partnership of life between a man and a woman, which is ordered to the well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children. When validly contracted between two baptized persons, marriage is a sacrament (Matrimony) (CCC 1601). Christ restored marriage to its original meaning as an indissoluble union, and elevated it to a sacrament — an efficacious sign of his own covenant love for the Church (CCC 1614–1616).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is marriage always a sacrament? Marriage is a natural covenant, but when validly contracted between two baptized persons, Christ elevates it to a sacrament.
