Melchizedek
Melchizedek is the mysterious king-priest of Genesis who offered bread and wine and blessed Abraham — a type of Christ's eternal priesthood and of the Eucharistic offering.
Melchizedek is the mysterious king of Salem and "priest of God Most High" who met Abraham after his victory over the kings, brought out bread and wine, and blessed Abraham (Genesis 14:18–20). He is a profound type of Christ's priesthood, explicitly cited in the New Testament (CCC 1544).
Who Melchizedek Was
Melchizedek appears briefly in Genesis 14 — without genealogy, without birth or death recorded — as "king of Salem" (traditionally identified with Jerusalem) and priest who offers bread and wine to Abraham and blesses him. He receives a tithe from Abraham, showing that even the patriarch recognized his priestly dignity (Genesis 14:18–20).
The Typology
The Letter to the Hebrews develops the typology of Melchizedek at length. Christ is a priest "according to the order of Melchizedek" (Hebrews 5:10; Psalm 110:4) — not after the Levitical priestly order, which was temporary, but after this eternal, mysterious order. Like Melchizedek: Christ has no recorded priestly genealogy (his priesthood is not inherited but divine); his priesthood is eternal; and his offering is bread and wine (CCC 1544).
Eucharistic Significance
Because Melchizedek offered bread and wine — the very elements of the Eucharist — his offering has always been read by the Church as a type of the Eucharistic sacrifice. The Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I) explicitly mentions "the holy sacrifice, the spotless victim" offered by Melchizedek as a prefiguration of the Mass (CCC 1333).
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Melchizedek an angel or a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ? Some early interpreters proposed this based on his mysterious description in Hebrews. The Church's mainstream tradition reads him as a historical Canaanite king-priest who functioned typologically — not as a divine being himself (CCC 1544).
