Resurrection of the Dead
The resurrection of the dead is the belief that at the end of time all souls will be reunited with their bodies — the same body, glorified — and stand before God for the Last Judgment.
The resurrection of the dead is the Christian belief that at the end of time, all the dead will be raised — their souls reunited with their bodies — and will stand before God for the Last Judgment. It is a defined truth of the Catholic faith (CCC 988, 1038).
Based on Christ's Resurrection
The resurrection of the dead is grounded in the historical fact of Christ's own Resurrection. Because Christ rose bodily from the dead, those united to him by faith and Baptism will also rise. Paul makes this explicit: "If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies" (Romans 8:11; CCC 989).
The Body Matters
Catholic teaching insists on the resurrection of the body — not merely the survival of the soul. Human beings are body-soul unities, and the full redemption of the person requires the redemption of the body (CCC 990). The risen body will be the same body, but transformed and glorified — as Christ's risen body was the same body, yet no longer subject to suffering, death, or the limits of space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the body be exactly the same? The Church teaches it will be the same body — personal identity is preserved — but transformed into a spiritual body (1 Corinthians 15:44). The marks of Christ's wounds were visible in his risen body; the risen bodies of the faithful will bear the mark of their own history, but glorified (CCC 999–1000).
Does this mean cremation is wrong? No. The Church permits cremation as long as it is not chosen to deny belief in the resurrection of the body. The Church prefers burial as a sign of the dignity of the body and hope in the resurrection (CCC 2300).
