Rosary

The Rosary is a meditative form of prayer in which the faithful contemplate the mysteries of Christ's life through the intercession of Mary — the most beloved Marian devotion.

The Rosary is a form of meditative prayer that combines vocal prayers with contemplation of the mysteries of Christ's life through the intercession of Mary. It is one of the most beloved Marian devotions of the Catholic Church and has been consistently recommended by the popes (CCC 2678, 2708).

The Structure

The Rosary consists of twenty mysteries of faith — events in the lives of Jesus and Mary — grouped into four sets of five. For each mystery, the faithful pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be while meditating on the mystery. The four sets are the Joyful Mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries (added by St. John Paul II), the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries.

The Mysteries

Joyful: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Finding in the Temple.
Luminous: Baptism of Jesus, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration, Institution of the Eucharist.
Sorrowful: Agony in the Garden, Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying the Cross, Crucifixion.
Glorious: Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, Assumption, Coronation of Mary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rosary "vain repetition"? No. Jesus's warning against "vain repetition" (Matthew 6:7) refers to pagan prayers meant to wear down the gods by sheer volume. The Rosary uses rhythmic, repetitive prayer as a meditative backdrop — the vocal prayer supports interior contemplation of the mysteries of Christ (CCC 2678).

Do Catholics have to pray the Rosary? The Rosary is not obligatory — it is a devotion, not a sacrament. But it is strongly recommended by the Church and has been called by popes a "summary of the Gospel." Our Lady of Fatima asked specifically for daily Rosary prayer.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
