Sabbath

The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, set aside in the Old Covenant for rest and the worship of God.

The Sabbath, which represented the completion of the first creation, has been replaced by Sunday which recalls the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Christ (CCC 2175, 2190). The Sabbath was a sign of the irrevocable covenant between God and Israel (CCC 2171-2172).

From Sabbath to Sunday

For Christians, the observance of the Lord's Day (Sunday) fulfills the moral command of the Old Covenant to set aside time for God and rest, but in a new and definitive way (CCC 2175-2176).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Christians worship on Sunday instead of Saturday? Because Jesus rose from the dead on the 'first day of the week,' which Christians celebrate as the 'eighth day' or the day of the new creation (CCC 2174).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
