Sadducees
The Sadducees were a Jewish priestly sect in the time of Jesus that rejected the resurrection of the dead and emphasized the written Torah.
The Sadducees were a religious and political group, largely composed of the priestly aristocracy in Jerusalem, who controlled the Temple (CCC 575). They were theological conservatives who accepted only the written Pentateuch and rejected many newer beliefs (CCC 993).
Denial of the Resurrection
The Sadducees famously denied the resurrection of the dead, a point on which Jesus specifically corrected them using the Scriptures (Matthew 22; CCC 993).

Why did they conflict with Jesus? Their conflict was both religious (the nature of the afterlife) and political, as they feared that Jesus' movement would disrupt the stability of the Temple and their relationship with the Romans (CCC 591, 595-596).
