Sacrifice

Sacrifice is an act of offering to God to express adoration, gratitude, or reparation for sin.

Adoration is the first act of the virtue of religion. To adore God is to acknowledge Him as God, as the Creator and Savior, the Lord and Master of everything that exists (CCC 2096). Sacrifice is an outward sign of this interior adoration (CCC 2099).

The One Sacrifice of Christ

All Old Testament sacrifices were a preparation for the one, perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross (CCC 613-614). The Mass makes this one sacrifice present today (CCC 1362-1367).

Frequently Asked Questions

Must we still offer sacrifices? We are called to offer our own lives—our prayers, works, and sufferings—in union with Christ's sacrifice for the salvation of the world (CCC 2100).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
