Bread of Life

Bread of Life is Jesus's declaration that he himself is the nourishment for which every human heart hungers — received through faith and bodily through the Eucharist, the 'true food' that gives eternal life.

Bread of Life is one of Jesus's great "I AM" sayings in the sixth chapter of John's Gospel: "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). He later intensifies the claim: "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink" (John 6:55) — the Eucharistic discourse that divides his disciples (CCC 1338).

The Old Testament Background

The image of bread from God runs through the Old Testament: manna in the desert (Exodus 16), the showbread in the Temple (Exodus 25:30), and the wisdom that invites: "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed" (Proverbs 9:5). Jesus presents himself as the fulfillment of all these: the true manna, the true bread from heaven that the Father gives (John 6:32–33; CCC 1094).

The Eucharistic Discourse

John 6 is the Eucharistic discourse — Jesus's extended teaching on himself as the Bread of Life. When he says "My flesh is true food," many disciples found this intolerable and walked away (John 6:60–66). Jesus did not soften or reinterpret his words. The Church has always read this passage as the Scriptural foundation of the doctrine of the Real Presence (CCC 1338).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "Bread of Life" refer to Jesus himself or to the Eucharist? Both — and inseparably. Jesus himself is the Bread of Life, received both through faith ("whoever comes to me") and through the Eucharist ("unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood," John 6:53). The Eucharist is the sacramental form through which Jesus, the Bread of Life, is received bodily (CCC 1338).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
