Cathedral

A cathedral is the principal church of a diocese, containing the 'cathedra' or chair of the bishop.

The cathedral is the mother church of the diocese and the center of its liturgical life (CCC 1182, 1572). Its name comes from the cathedra, which symbolizes the bishop's teaching authority and his role as pastor of the local Church (CCC 1572).

Symbol of Unity

The cathedral represents the unity of the faithful under the guidance of their bishop, who is the successor of the Apostles (CCC 886, 938).
