Chrism
Chrism is the holy oil, consecrated by the bishop, used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.
Sacred Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam, consecrated by the bishop during the Chrism Mass (CCC 1297). It is used for the anointing that signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1289, 1294).
Sacramental Use
Chrism is used in Baptism to signify entry into the royal priesthood; in Confirmation to seal the candidate with the Spirit; and in Holy Orders for anointing priests and bishops (CCC 1241, 1294, 1574).
