Consecrated Virgins
Consecrated virgins are women who are solemnly consecrated to God by the bishop to live in a state of virginity for the sake of the Kingdom.
Women who live in the world (or in a convent) can be consecrated to God in a state of virginity 'for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven' (CCC 922-924). This ancient order of virgins is a sign of the Church's love for Christ (CCC 923-924).
Spouse of Christ
Through the rite of consecration, the virgin becomes a sacred person and a 'spouse of Christ,' dedicated to the service of the Church (CCC 923).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do consecrated virgins take vows? They are consecrated by the bishop rather than taking traditional religious vows, but the consecration implies a lifelong commitment to virginity and prayer.
