The descent into hell refers to Christ’s state in death when He visited the realm of the dead to proclaim the Gospel to the spirits imprisoned there.
The descent into hell refers to the truth that Jesus 'descended into hell' (the realm of the dead) between His death and His resurrection (CCC 632-633). This 'hell' was the abode of all the dead deprived of the vision of God (CCC 633).
Victory Over Death
Jesus descended to free the just who had gone before Him (CCC 633). By His death, He conquered the devil and opened the gates of heaven for the righteous (CCC 634-635).
