Devil

Satan, or the Devil, is a fallen angel who rejected God and seeks to lead humanity away from Him.

Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: 'The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own self-determination' (CCC 391). His sin was a radical and irrevocable rejection of God and His kingdom (CCC 392).

The Deceiver

Scripture calls him 'the father of lies' and 'the deceiver of the whole world' (John 8:44; Revelation 12:9). He tempted our first parents and continues to tempt humanity, though his power is not infinite: he is only a creature (CCC 394-395).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Satan be forgiven? No. The character of the angels' choice is irrevocable. There is no repentance for the angels after their fall, just as there is no repentance for men after death (CCC 393).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
