Diaconate
The diaconate is the first degree of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the office of the deacon.
The diaconate is the order of service (CCC 1536, 1569-1571). Deacons are ordained not for the priesthood but for the service (CCC 1569).

Since the time of the Apostles, the Church has recognized the diaconate as a distinct and permanent degree of the hierarchy (CCC 1571).
