Disciple

A disciple is one who follows Jesus — accepting his teaching, living his way, and sharing his mission — the fundamental identity of every baptized Christian called to lifelong following of Christ.

A disciple (from the Latin discipulus, learner) is one who follows Jesus — accepting his teaching, living his way of life, and participating in his mission. In the narrow sense it refers to those who followed Jesus during his earthly ministry; in the broader sense it refers to every baptized Christian called to lifelong learning and following of Christ (CCC 520).

Discipleship in the Gospels

Jesus "associated his disciples with his own life, revealed the mystery of the Kingdom to them, and gave them a share in his mission, his joy, and his sufferings" (CCC 787). To be a disciple means to follow Jesus — not merely admire him from a distance — which involves leaving behind competing allegiances: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23).

The Great Commission

Jesus's final command — the Great Commission — was to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). The Church's entire mission is the making of disciples: people who know, love, and follow Christ and who themselves make other disciples. Discipleship is not an elective but the fundamental shape of the Christian life (CCC 849).

Discipleship and the Sacraments

Discipleship is entered through Baptism and sustained through the other sacraments, especially the Eucharist. The disciple does not follow Jesus alone or by personal effort — discipleship is lived in the Church, through her sacramental life, her teaching, and her community (CCC 787).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a disciple and an apostle? All apostles were disciples, but not all disciples were apostles. An apostle (one who is sent) was specifically commissioned by Christ to carry his authority and establish the Church. A disciple is simply a follower. The twelve Apostles were chosen from a larger group of disciples (Luke 6:13; CCC 858).
