Encyclical
An encyclical is a formal pastoral letter written by the Pope for the entire Church, addressing matters of Catholic doctrine, morals, or social teaching.
An encyclical is a formal pastoral letter written by the Pope and circulated to the universal Church—and often to all people of good will. It is one of the highest forms of papal teaching and forms a key part of the ordinary Magisterium (CCC 892).
Teaching Authority
While not every encyclical contains infallible definitions, Catholics are called to receive encyclical teachings with religious submission of mind and will. They clarify doctrine, respond to contemporary moral issues, and develop Catholic social teaching (CCC 892).
Naming Convention
Encyclicals are traditionally named for their first two or three Latin words (e.g., Evangelium Vitae, Laudato Si'). They address a wide variety of topics ranging from the defense of life and marriage to the theology of the environment and social justice.
