Epiclesis
The invocation in the liturgy by which the priest asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit.
The epiclesis is the petition in which the priest begs the Father to send the Holy Spirit to sanctify the gifts of bread and wine so that they become the Body and Blood of Christ (CCC 1105, 1353). It is also used to ask for the Spirit's power upon the faithful who receive the sacraments (CCC 1106).
The Power of Transformation
In every sacrament, the epiclesis expresses the truth that the sacraments are the work of the Holy Spirit, not merely human rituals (CCC 1106-1107, 1127).
