The evangelical counsels—poverty, chastity, and obedience—are the ways in which the Church helps the faithful to follow Christ more closely (CCC 914-915). While all Christians are called to live these in spirit, they are embraced as a permanent state in the consecrated life (CCC 914-916).
Following Christ
By professing the counsels, the person intends to be more closely configured to Christ, who was poor, chaste, and obedient (CCC 916). They are a sign of the world to come (CCC 933).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the counsels mandatory? No. They are an invitation to a more perfect following of Christ, distinct from the commandments (CCC 915).
