Human Dignity
Human dignity is the inherent worth of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God and called to share in His divine life.
Human dignity is rooted in the creation of man in the image and likeness of God (CCC 1700). It is fulfilled in his vocation to divine beatitude and is an essential right of every human being (CCC 1700, 1930).
The Foundation of Rights
The dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society (CCC 1930). It requires the respect for and promotion of the fundamental rights of the person (CCC 1929-1933).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can human dignity be lost? No. While sin can obscure it, the inherent worth of the person as a creature made by God remains (CCC 1701).
