An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church (CCC 1471).
The Treasury of the Church
Indulgences are based on the 'treasury of the Church,' which consists of the infinite value of Christ's merits and the prayers and good works of all the saints (CCC 1476-1477).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are indulgences the same as forgiveness? No. An indulgence does not forgive the guilt of sin (which happens in Confession); it removes the 'temporal punishment' or purification needed for the effects of sin (CCC 1471-1473).
