Israelites
The Israelites are the descendants of Jacob, the chosen people with whom God made a covenant.
The Israelites are the descendants of Jacob (Israel), the People of God of the Old Covenant (CCC 62, 762). God chose them to be a holy nation (CCC 63).
The New Israel
The Church is the 'New Israel,' but physical descendants of the Israelites remain dear to God (CCC 839-840).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are they the same as Jews? 'Israelites' usually refers to the people before the exile; 'Jews' came into use after the Babylonian exile (CCC 839).
