Messiah
Messiah is the Hebrew word meaning 'Anointed One,' the title of the promised Savior of Israel, fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Messiah (Greek: Christos) refers to the one whom God would send to redeem Israel and establish His kingdom (CCC 436). In the Old Testament, kings, priests, and sometimes prophets were anointed with oil as a sign of their divine mission (CCC 436).
The Anointing of Jesus
Jesus is the Messiah because He was anointed by the Holy Spirit from the moment of His conception and at His baptism for His triple office of priest, prophet, and king (CCC 436-439).
Frequently Asked Questions
What did the Jews expect the Messiah to be? Many Jews expected a political or military leader who would liberate Israel from Roman rule, but Jesus revealed that His messianic mission was spiritual and universal (CCC 439, 559).
