Conferring Sacred Power
The sacramental act which integrates a man into the order of bishops, presbyters (priests), or deacons through the laying on of hands by a bishop and the consecratory prayer. Ordination confers a gift of the Holy Spirit that permits the exercise of sacred power (sacra potestas) which comes from Christ himself through his Church (CCC 1538). It is also called consecratio — a setting apart and investiture by Christ for his Church.
