The Old Covenant
The series of relationships and promises God established with Israel through the Patriarchs and Moses.
The Old Covenant refers to the bond God made with His chosen people, Israel, particularly through the Law given at Sinai (CCC 62, 1961-1962). It was a preparation for the coming of Christ and the New Covenant (CCC 121-122).
The Law as a Pedagogue
The Old Law served to reveal sin and to prepare the heart for the Gospel of Grace. It is represented by the 'shadows' that find their 'substance' in Christ (CCC 1963-1964, 122).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Old Covenant still valid? The Church teaches that God's gifts and call to the Jewish people are irrevocable, but the Mosaic Law's ceremonial aspects find their fulfillment in Christ (CCC 839, 1962).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
