Sanctuary

The sanctuary is the part of the church building where the altar is located and where the sacred rites are performed.

The sanctuary is the place where the altar stands, where the Word of God is proclaimed, and where the priest, the deacon, and the other ministers exercise their offices (CCC 1182). It is the 'holy place' of the church building.

The Heart of the Church

The sanctuary should be clearly distinguished from the nave (where the people sit) and is treated with special reverence because of the sacred actions that take place there (CCC 1182-1184).

Frequently Asked Questions

What else is in the sanctuary? Usually the tabernacle, the ambo (lectern), and the priest's chair (cathedra in a cathedral) (CCC 1182-1184).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
