Sheol

The Old Testament realm of the dead where the souls of the departed waited for the Messiah.

Sheol (translated as Hades in Greek) was the abode of the dead where the souls of the righteous and the unrighteous went before the Resurrection of Christ (CCC 633). It was not a place of punishment but a place of waiting (CCC 633).

Christ's Descent into Hell

Jesus descended into Sheol to proclaim the Gospel to the spirits imprisoned there and to bring the righteous of the Old Covenant into the glory of Heaven (CCC 632-635).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sheol the same as the Hell of the Damned? No. In the Apostles' Creed, 'hell' refers to Sheol/Hades; the place of eternal punishment for the damned is distinct (CCC 633).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
