Simony is the buying or selling of spiritual things, such as sacraments or ecclesiastical offices.
Simony is the buying or selling of spiritual things (CCC 2117). The term comes from Simon the Magician, who wished to buy spiritual power (Acts 8:9-24; CCC 2117).
Sacraments are Free
It is impossible to appropriate to oneself spiritual goods, for their source is in God (CCC 2117). This includes the sale of sacraments, blessings, or spiritual offices (CCC 2117, 2121).
