Sola Scriptura

Sola Scriptura is the Protestant principle that Scripture alone is the rule of faith — a claim the Catholic Church rejects because Scripture itself requires Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium to be rightly interpreted.

Sola Scriptura — "Scripture alone" — is the Protestant principle, formulated during the 16th-century Reformation, holding that Sacred Scripture is the only infallible authority for Christian faith and practice. The Catholic Church rejects this principle as itself unscriptural and historically untenable (CCC 80–83).

The Protestant Claim

Sola Scriptura holds that the Bible is self-interpreting, self-authenticating, and complete — that no external authority (Pope, council, or tradition) is needed to determine Christian doctrine. The Bible alone, read by the individual believer under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is sufficient for all matters of faith.

The Catholic Response

The Church offers several responses. First, the Bible itself never claims that Scripture alone is sufficient. Second, the canon of Scripture — which books belong in the Bible — was determined by the Church through Sacred Tradition, not by Scripture itself. Third, the history of Protestantism demonstrates that sola Scriptura in practice produces thousands of contradictory interpretations, showing that Scripture requires an authoritative interpreter (CCC 85, 119).

The Catholic Alternative

The Catholic position is that Scripture and Sacred Tradition together form the one Deposit of Faith, interpreted authentically by the Magisterium. This is not the Church placing herself above Scripture — it is the recognition that Scripture emerged from the Church, is interpreted within the Church, and cannot be properly understood apart from the living Tradition in which it was written (CCC 80–83).

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Bible teach sola Scriptura? It doesn't — which is itself a refutation of the principle. If sola Scriptura were true, it would need to be taught in Scripture. 2 Timothy 3:16 ("All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable...") teaches biblical inspiration and usefulness, not the sufficiency of Scripture alone (CCC 82).
